Delwood Sports suffered damage from back-to-back spring storms at their East Austin baseball complex.

AUSTIN, Texas — A Central Texas youth sports league is asking for the community’s help after its East Austin sports complex suffered heavy damage during the May 28 microburst.

For nearly 70 years, Delwood Sports has been teaching kids ages 4-14 in East Austin the game of baseball and the lessons of life.

“There’s patience. There’s hard work. There’s perseverance,” said Ross Pry, Delwood Sports co-president.

They are all lessons Pry and Co-President Jason Adame are now living after back-to-back spring storms.

“Somewhat of a gut punch, I would say,” said Adame.

On Tuesday, city crews were replacing the roof of the concessions building that blew off in early March. That building also suffered rain damage inside over two months.

Then, during the May 28 microburst, 85 mph winds struck that building and the surrounding fields.

“Right here is where we took a ton of damage,” said Pry, showing KVUE around the most heavily damaged field on Tuesday morning. “This roof actually extended all the way over to the other side of the bleachers there, and you can see that the backstop fence is blown over as well. So, that pretty much takes this field out of commission.”

There’s also damage to scoreboards and dugouts.

The plan now is to spend the summer repairing damage and removing debris before the fall season starts in September.

“From a time frame standpoint, it does feel tight,” said Pry.

Whether through donations or volunteering, Pry and Adame welcome anyone stepping up to the plate to help them meet that goal.

“We’d love the community support,” said Pry.
