LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - So far this year, 12 people have died by suicide in Webb County. To prevent this number from rising, a 5K walk is being organized for September to raise awareness of 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

The event will take place at North Central Park and be hosted by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

During the event, various agencies will be present to inform everyone about the mental health resources available to them.

Organizers, including Dr. Julie Bazan with AHEC, aim to remind people that help is available for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis. She stated, “Take one minute to analyze yourself and then reach out for help. Don’t be afraid, on the contrary, you are brave. You love your family, you love yourself, because you are reaching out for help.”

The event is scheduled to happen on September 6 at North Central Park.

For more information, you can visit the AHEC office at 1505 C. del Norte, Suite 430, or call them at (956) 712-0037.
