Business Insider CEO Barbara Peng sent out the following to the staff on Friday:
Team,
At Business Insider, we’re embracing AI in a thoughtful, ambitious way because it can help us do work better, faster, and smarter. Here’s our approach to AI as well as our AI policy.
Our Approach to AI @ BI
1) Day-to-day proficiency (Owner: You!)
- We know that people who regularly use AI are more productive and impactful, so our goal is for you to have the right tools and support to become proficient AI users.
2) Workflow automation & effectiveness (Owner: Team Leaders)
- Every team has different workflows, so each team leader will be responsible for figuring out and adopting the AI best practices, prompts, and automations that work for them.
3) Productization (Owners: CPO, Jeff Rabb & CTO, Harry Hope)
- This is the area with the greatest long-term opportunity. AI can help us personalize experiences, improve discovery, and create smarter user journeys that surface more of the journalism we produce every day.
Our AI Policy
Below is our AI policy, which lays out the guidelines for how we use AI responsibly across the company. It’s a living document — AI is developing fast and we’ll continue to update it as things evolve. A newsroom-specific policy will follow.
At Business Insider, we believe in high quality journalism. AI might help us get there faster, and do more of what matters. But it will never replace the important work that our journalists do.
Barbara
Business Insider AI Policy
At Business Insider, we encourage employees to use generative AI (GenAI). When used thoughtfully and in line with this policy, we believe GenAI can be a powerful tool for everyone.
Enterprise ChatGPT
As a BI employee, you have access to Enterprise ChatGPT, which should be used for work-related purposes. It’s our default tool because it doesn’t train its model on our input and provides additional protections, including a secure, private workspace for your prompts and responses. (This is the reason, for example, that you may input confidential or proprietary company information into Enterprise ChatGPT.)
Here are guidelines for using Enterprise ChatGPT:
As a BI employee, you are always responsible for your work. Enterprise ChatGPT is a tool to support you, not to replace your judgment.
It’s your responsibility to check and confirm the accuracy of any content generated by Enterprise ChatGPT.
Because Enterprise ChatGPT is a secure, BI-specific system, you may input confidential or proprietary information.
You are responsible for ensuring your work does not plagiarize or infringe copyright.
If you are editing or creating images or videos, you must ensure BI owns the copyright to any content you upload.
Never use AI to imitate a real person’s likeness, persona, or voice without explicit approval from the individual or Legal (or Standards if you work in the newsroom).
If you publish content from Enterprise ChatGPT — text, video, audio, images, data, or code — to third parties (our website, our partners’ sites, social media, clients) without human review, you must disclose that it was generated by AI.
Additional considerations for the newsroom
When using AI to edit, suggest, and create content, you must follow all of our editorial standards.
Always follow best practices for handling confidential source information.
If you have any questions or concerns, consult with Standards.
Other GenAI Tools
Not all GenAI tools provide the same protections as our Enterprise ChatGPT account, and some train their models with user input. Accordingly, you are free to use them as long as you follow both the guidelines above (in Section 1) and below.
Do not enter content published on BI into the tool without approval from ai@businessinsider.com.
Do not enter any sensitive, confidential, or proprietary information1 about BI, its clients, subscribers, or other parties with whom BI has a relationship.
Do not enter Personally Identifiable Information (PII)2, including Sensitive Personal Data3, of customers, contractors, employees, directors, and shareholders, or those of our affiliates, licensees, or vendors.
Do not use it to edit or create images or videos without separate approval (email ai@businessinsider.com).
Do not enter password information, API keys, or private keys.
You must comply with the relevant Gen AI’s Terms of Service, available on their websites. Be aware that their terms may change over time.
The below table summarizes various use cases (and note that all approved uses are subject to the guidelines above):
Use case | Enterprise ChatGPT | Other GenAI |
Confidential or proprietary company information1? | Yes | No |
Personally Identifiable Information2 (PII) of customers, employees or others connected to the company? | Yes | No |
PII2 of sources or subjects | Yes, but not confidential source information. | Not confidential source information. For other PII, please consult with Standards or Legal. |
Inputting content published on BI | Yes | No, unless approved for this purpose by ai@businessinsider.comwhere the publicly available GenAI does not train its model with our input. |
General queries that do not involve any of the above use cases | Yes | Yes |
Other Terms
All other Business Insider standards and policies apply.
Your work product, including anything you create with GenAI, is the property of Business Insider.
Note that the company may have agreements with other AI providers for specific services. These are approved for those specific purposes.
Failure to comply may result in corrective action.
The technology is evolving; BI will review these guidelines and update as needed.
