UNC Health is warning patients covered by Cigna that their health care coverage could be impacted in the coming months.

According to UNC Health, the health system's three-year contract with Cigna expires on Nov. 30, 2025. If an agreement isn't reached, all Cigna commercial plans will be considered out of network beginning Dec. 1.

A UNC Health spokesperson said leaders have already been in touch with Cigna to negotiate a new contract.

"Unfortunately, Cigna is not willing to engage in meaningful discussion or commit to patient care that UNC Health requires," according to a statement from UNC Health.

UNC Health patients covered by Cigna can continue using the same doctors, clinics and hospitals, but they should be aware of the possible change coming at the end of this year.

UNC Health released the following statement:

"UNC Health is urging employers who have chosen Cigna and Cigna members to be aware of this situation as it unfolds over the coming months ... While UNC Health hopes to come to a mutually beneficial agreement with Cigna prior to expiration of the current agreement, during upcoming enrollment periods, employers and patients with Cigna coverage may want to consider alternative plans that include UNC Health in network for all of 2026."

UNC Health will post updates online as negotiations unfold.
