Dothan school puts teacher’s health at risk, lawsuit claims

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) -A Dothan teacher claims school administrators put her life at risk by denying her access to the internet so she could monitor glucose readings.

Jolie Cannon filed a federal lawsuit this month that claims the school system violated her rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Cannon, a Dothan High teacher since 1999, alleged her diabetes is so severe she must monitor blood sugar continuously using data transmitted via the internet or cellular service.

According to the suit, she uses insulin pumps in tandem with a Continuous Glucose Monitor to ensure that she receives sufficient insulin to control her blood sugar levels but not too much, which could put her in a diabetic coma.

However, the lawsuit alleges her cell service inside the school is not unreliable, and administrators denied her WIFI access, citing security concerns.

After conferring with experts, Cannon suggested a secondary WIFI setup that would provide her with service but limit her access, which she believes would have resolved security concerns, per the suit. However, she claimed, school administrators denied her suggestion.

She admitted that the school provided her with a “Hotspot,” but she said the device would not work with her CGM and another system that sends readings to her doctor’s office and shares those readings with family in case of an emergency.

Cannon is seeking a court ruling to force Dothan High School to provide her with internet access.

Records show that Dothan City school administrators received a copy of Cannon’s complaint this week.

As a matter of policy, the system does not comment on pending lawsuits.
