The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has mandated that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac incorporate cryptocurrency as an asset in their risk assessments for single-family mortgage loans. According to a report by Hannah Lang from Reuters, this directive could allow borrowers to leverage their crypto investments when qualifying for home loans.

William Pulte, the FHFA director, announced on social media that the move aligns with former President Donald Trump's ambition to establish the U.S. as a leading crypto hub. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which have been under government conservatorship since the 2008 financial crisis, currently back over half of the nation's mortgages.

The integration of cryptocurrencies, known for their volatility, into mortgage assessments is a noteworthy development. Despite the risks, the potential for cryptocurrencies to provide a more comprehensive financial profile of borrowers is being considered. This follows a favorable market response, with bitcoin reaching record highs earlier this year, buoyed by Trump's pro-crypto policies.
