The Federal Trade Commission has extended a claims period for players of the popular online video game “Fortnite.” The FTC says eligible consumers can still file a claim until July 9, 2025, if they have not already filed a claim related to a settlement reached last year.

The settlement between the FTC and Epic Games -- the developer of “Fortnite” -- calls for $245 million to be paid to consumers. Epic Games was accused by the FTC of unlawfully charging players for unwanted purchases, while also allowing children to make unauthorized charges without their parents’ permission.

Epic was also accused of blocking some users who disputed wrongful charges from accessing their purchased content. Epic has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, but is paying the settlement.

How do I file a claim?

Claims can be filed online through a specially designed FTC website.

Who is eligible to file a claim?

Fortnite players or their parents are eligible to file a claim if they meet any of the following requirements:

  • You were charged in-game currency for items you didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022.
  • Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018.
  • Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges.

A claim can only be filed by someone who is 18 years or older. When filing a claim, you will need either a claim number that was sent to you by the FTC, or your Epic Games account ID.

For help finding your Epic Games ID, visit the Epic website.

How much will I receive and when will the money arrive?

The amount of money a consumer receives is dependent on several factors, including how many people file credible claims. So far, the FTC has paid out nearly $200 million to affected players but has not disclosed the average payment amount.

Currently, the FTC is paying out claims that were filed before Feb. 15, 2025, and says the next round of payments will go out in 2026, once the agency has reviewed and validated all claims.

Claimants will be able to choose to receive the money either by check or through a PayPal payment.

Consumers who have questions about their payment should contact the refund administrator, Rust Consulting, Inc, at 1-833-915-0880 or by email at admin@fortniterefund.com.
