Fresno Cal Ripken team prepping for World Series

Out at Fig Garden Elementary, Bullard's 11-and-under team is going through final preps for the World Series.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Out at Fig Garden Elementary, Bullard's 11-and-under team is going through final preps for the World Series.

"So surprised that I'm taking a plane to the other side of the country," says Dominic Hall.

In August, the boys will play for the Cal Ripken World Series more than 2,000 miles away from home.

"We will be the only team from California represented," says James Hall, Dominic's dad.

They'll rep the state in Florence, Alabama.

"I have no idea," says Warner Gibbs when asked if he knew where Alabama was on a map.

Helping the boys get right is someone who knows a thing or two about traveling for games.

Anthony McCoy is a Bullard grad who went on to play four years in the NFL. The tight end won Super Bowl 48 with the Seattle Seahawks.

"All the kids, him and his friends, seem to like this sport more and seem to be better at it too, being invited to a World Series and all," he said.

Coach McCoy is helping this year's team on and off the field.

"Helping the kids grow as baseball players, but then also as young men," he said.

One of those lessons is on hydration.

It's a lesson that helped in the win of the season in a nine-inning game against Tulare.

"As far as the hydration, they're up there," McCoy said. "Now, as far as the eating, I mean, that's tough. How are you going to turn Wingstop down?"

A team that's been together for the past three years, it's the furthest any Bullard team has advanced in 20 years.
