Letter: Artificial Intelligence is dangerous for kids

To the Editor:

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) has already been to me both a blessing and a curse. I am using Microsoft Word’s dictate function to write this without touching the keyboard. On the other hand, one of my favorite YouTube hosts has been impersonated by A.I. Apparently many are being deceived.

I was made aware that this technology is deceiving our children and youth. An article An Addicting Isolating Fantasy on World Magazine’s website begins with a story of a 10-year-old girl who was a victim of cyber bullying. Another fifth-grade student had used an A.I. app to make 1,000 artificial nude images of the victim. This app was rated as appropriate for ages 9 and over.

The World cites The Wall Street Journal which documented how Meta’s artificial voices were engaging in sexual conversations with minors. World also cites a Forbes article that tested an A.I. app that provided fentanyl recipes to minors.

After using a chatbot called Character.ai, a 14-year-old boy took his life after prolonged sexual advances by an A.I. bot simulating the voice of a popular video game character.

A Moratorium on AI Regulation is Madness from The Hill informs us that the “big beautiful bill” before the U.S. Senate contains a “10-year moratorium prohibiting state regulation of artificial intelligence.” This moratorium would make it illegal for any state to regulate artificial intelligence for the period of 10 years.

A technology that exploits our children must be regulated. We arrest and prosecute real people who exploit children. This is all artificial, and apparently, without regulation. Just as we outlaw this vile evil among real people, we must also outlaw it from the more persuasive, secretive and deceiving technology.

The bill is before the Senate. Contact Sens. Thune and Rounds .

Tell them that to protect against the exploitation of children, you want them to eliminate or amend the moratorium on state regulation of artificial intelligence in the “big beautiful bill”. Perhaps you can refer them to the above articles in World and the Hill.
