Celine Song, the writer and director of the A24 films “Past Lives” and “Materialists,” is developing a drama series at HBO. Titled “Damage,” the series is set in the world of e-sports.

Song will write and executive produce the project, which reteams her with 2AM producer David Hinojosa, who worked with her on both “Past Lives” and “Materialists.” Speaking about “Damage,” she said, “I’d love to talk more about it when it’s further along.”

Craig Mazin, best known for his HBO series “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us,” has also boarded as an executive producer. Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O’Connor (Word Games) are also executive producers. Also confirmed is David Hinojosa who is also an executive producer. Song continues to work with A24, which serves as the studio on the series.

“Past Lives” was Song’s debut feature as a writer and director. The film stars Greta Lee as a Korean American woman who is married to a white American man (John Magaro) but begins to reconnect with her childhood friend and crush from Korea (Teo Yoo). After debuting at Sundance in 2023 and in theaters later that year, “Past Lives” went on to earn Academy Award nominations for best picture and best screenplay.

“Materialists” is a romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson as a professional matchmaker who finds herself in a love triangle with a wealthy financier (Pedro Pascal) and her ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans). Produced by A24, the film will be released via Sony on Friday.

Before breaking into the film industry, Song worked primarily as a playwright. Her credits include an off-Broadway play called “Endlings” and a digital production of Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull” performed within the game “Sims 4” and streamed on Twitch for the New York Theatre Workshop, as well as the plays “Tom and Eliza,” “Family” and “The Feast.”
