Omaha nonprofit turns sports card hobby into fundraiser during College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - As the College World Series draws thousands to Omaha every year, one local nonprofit is capitalizing on the crowds — using a unique hobby to raise money for a good cause, displaying sports cards as far as the eye can see.

“We’re doing a fundraiser here today. We’re combining the World Series being in town and the baseball card show. We combine both of those together to raise a little money,” Ryan Basye said, with On Deck Housing.

On Deck Housing is a nonprofit that builds affordable housing in the Omaha community. This year, they hosted their first-ever card show, where visitors could buy, sell and trade cards of all kinds.

“Football… basketball… for sure, but also surprisingly Pokémon, you know, it’s a really unique experience. It’s different,” participant Audric Bermel said. “You can find English, Japanese, all the different ones. And not even just athletes… we’ve got WWE, actors and a little bit of everything.”

The event was a financial success.

“I know today we raised thousands of dollars, so that will go into helping provide more affordable housing to those in need,” Basye said.

Organizers hope this inaugural event becomes an annual tradition.

“It was hectic, but the great part is meeting people that like the same hobby,” Basye said.

“The community is really great,” Bermel added. “You meet some great people, you meet some really good friends in the area. It’s a good way to get out and explore Omaha a bit and learn to do new things.”

Of course, one question stood out: which cards were the hottest sellers?

“Paul Skenes was hot, Jack Caglianone from the Royals was hot, Bobby Witt Jr. is always hot,” Basye said.

“I would say probably my favorite card today was a LeBron James autographed card,” Bermel said.

Prices ranged anywhere from $1 to several thousand dollars.

Kicking off on Father’s Day, participants said the event was a perfect way to spend the holiday.

“Today was a great day. Great Father’s Day. Great Father’s Day gift. Me and my dad love doing sports. It’s a great thing to do with your family. Great thing to do with your kids especially,” Bermel said.

“We had people from all over the country here today — it was great,” Basye said.

The event plans to return next year. As for the most expensive card sold?

A Tom Brady rookie card — with a price tag of $20,000.
