A quiet but visible protest unfolded outside the Dignity Health building in Citrus Heights on Thursday afternoon at Greenback Lane and Fountain Square Drive, where a small group of protesters held a large banner criticizing the company’s labor practices.
Organized by Alexander Hampton with the Nor Cal Carpenters Union, the demonstration focused on Dignity Health’s association with Layton Construction, a firm the union alleges is not requiring its subcontractors to pay union-scale wages on all jobs.
When approached by The Sentinel, two individuals stationed on the sidewalk said they were instructed not to speak with the media and were only there to hold signs. A flyer distributed by the union alleges that Layton Construction is “hurting workers” and their families by using subcontractors that offer lower, non-union wages or lack health benefits. The flyer also urges people to contact the CEOs of both Dignity Health and Layton Construction.
Hampton, a union organizer and field representative for the Nor Cal Carpenters Union, was present but declined to provide a statement to media on Thursday. Ron Rowlett, political director with the union, did not respond to a request for comment Friday. A Dignity Health media representative could not be reached for comment.
Layton Construction, which has a regional office in Roseville, is headquartered in Sandy, Utah, according to the union flyer. The company also did not respond to a request for comment.
The protest remained peaceful.
