West Monroe Sports and Events Center hosts floor hockey camp for kids

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A floor hockey camp is giving kids a fresh way to stay active and it’s part of a push to bring the sport back to the region.

Hockey may not be the first sport that comes to mind in Northeast Louisiana, but this floor hockey camp at the West Monroe Sports and Events Center is aiming to change that.

The people behind it say, the excitement isn’t just about the game, it’s about what it could mean for the future.

Inside the West Monroe Sports and Events Center this week, the sound of sticks hitting the floor might be surprising, but for these kids, floor hockey is quickly becoming a new favorite.

“You can shoot a few goals with your friends and play a few scrimmages and all that,” one camper said.

This is the second time this summer the Sports and Events Center has hosted a floor hockey camp, and it’s part of an effort to bring more exposure to the sport in the region.

“I think hockey in this entire region is coming back after a probably like a 20-year hiatus, so it’s really awesome to see just the overall growth in what is considered a untraditional hockey market,” said the head coach of the Bayou State Rougarou, Everett Thompson.

Organizers say their goal is to make the camp accessible to everyone and that means keeping it simple for first-timers.

“This is our second camp. Each camp we’ve had about 20 campers here. Our next camp is the last week of July. Our camps are open to 6 to 14-year-olds. You don’t have any experience. We provide all the equipment you need, just show up, come and have fun,” said the director of marketing at the West Monroe Sports and Events Center, Reece Aultman.

Coaches and organizers say they hope to keep expanding opportunities like this as more kids get hooked on hockey.

The next floor hockey camp will be held later this month, and Aultman says he is proud of the continuous growth he’s seen with these camps.
